Daniel J. Ortiz, C.S.P.
Daniel J. Ortiz, project director of Georgia Tech’s Occupational Safety and Health Continuing Education Program and senior research scientist, is program manager for the DOL/OSHA Safety and Health Consultation Program. Ortiz is a certified safety professional with more than 25 years of field and applied research experience in ergonomics and safety and has participated in more than 500 general industry and construction field studies He has directed several multiyear research projects in ergonomics and health and safety for organizations, such as the Defense Logistics Agency, poultry processing industry, and Emory University's School of Public Health. Ortiz received an M.P.H in occupational/environmental health and safety from University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a B.S. in microbiology from Arizona State University.
Myrtle I. Turner, Ph.D., C.E.T.
Myrtle I. Turner, director of Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center and senior research scientist/industrial hygienist with Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electronic Systems Laboratory, provides coordination, scheduling, training and related technical assistance to local, state, and federal agencies. Turner is course director and instructor for asbestos, lead-based paint, occupational safety and health, and Global Learning Observations to Benefit the Environment or GLOBE, courses. She has implemented distance learning courses for the Environmental Management Branch and directed and instructed more than 500 continuing education courses. Turner received a Ph.D. in higher education (occupational studies) and her B.S. in biology from Georgia State University and an M.P.H. in environmental studies from Emory University. She is a certified environmental trainer by the National Environmental Training Association.
Bryan Black, M.S.
Bryan Black, course director for Principles of Ergonomics at Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center, has more than 15 years of experience in the field of ergonomics and safety. Through Georgia Tech’s OSHA 21D Consultation Program, he has performed numerous safety and ergonomics site surveys to help small businesses reduce or eliminate workplace hazards.
Black worked with Georgia Tech’s Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access at the College of Architecture to study safety issues in accommodating people with disabilities in a manufacturing environment. The findings were published in the Journal of Rehabilitation, winter 2007 issue.
Black earned a M.S. in industrial engineering from Auburn University. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Steve Davis, President and Principal Consultant, GRM Inc.
Steve Davis, adjunct faculty member at Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center, is the president and principal consultant at GRM Inc., an international risk management consulting firm. During his 34 years of experience, he has directed, managed, and participated in major risk management consulting engagements for clients in the Americas, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
Davis is an author and nationally recognized speaker on risk management and regulatory issues. He also acts as a risk management adviser to industry and lobbyist groups in Washington, D.C. He holds degrees in engineering, business, and law.
Thomas A. Dean, C.S.P.
Thomas A. Dean, research scientist and faculty member at Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center, is a safety consultant to construction, maritime, and general industries in hazard identification, safety and health management systems evaluation, and the development of OSHA-mandated procedures. Dean is course chairman for NFPA 70E, electrical safety, safety management, and construction safety standards courses. He received an M.S. in management from Florida Institute of Technology and a B.S. in environmental health from East Tennessee State University. Dean is a certified safety professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Michelle Dunham, M.S.P.H., M.S.M.
Michelle Dunham, industrial hygiene consultant for Georgia Tech’s Safety and Health Consultation Program and faculty member of the OSHA Training Institute Education Center, specializes in occupational exposure assessment related to OSHA compliance. She has conducted health surveys for small Georgia businesses in high hazard industries, including woodworking shops, medical facilities, chemical plants, construction, and other manufacturing establishments. She has developed and conducted numerous training programs, as well as presented at conferences, seminars, and symposiums. Dunham received an M.S.P.H from University of Alabama at Birmingham and an M.S. in management from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Pamela Fisher, C.S.H.M., C.H.S.T.
Pamela Fisher, partner and operations manager at PROSAFE Solutions Inc., is a certified construction health and safety technician and certified health and safety manager. She is a past president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and was a 2005 recipient of the Safety Professional of the Year Award.
Jim Howry, C.U.S.A., M.S.M.
Jim Howry, research associate with Georgia Tech’s Safety and Health Consultation Program and instructor at the OSHA Training Institute Education Center, was formerly employed by CableCom Inc. as a regional loss control manager, overseeing multiple projects and managing more than 300 employees and subcontractors within the Eastern Region. He received an M.S. in management from Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.S. in criminal justice from University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Mike McCarroll, C.S.P.
Mike McCarroll, president, CEO, and principal consultant of PROSAFE Solutions Inc., is a certified safety professional, a certified professional consultant, and a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the National Safety Management Society. He assists a variety of clients in improving safety performance and organizational behavior, including conducting safety culture assessments, facilitating high performance safety seminars, implementing behavior-based safety systems, and providing management consulting on culture change for safety excellence.
Steven J. Owen, N.I.C.E.T.
Steven J. Owen, electrical standards instructor for Georgia Tech’s OSHA Outreach Program, is a certified chief electrical code analyst and authorized OSHA 10/30 Hour Trainer. An electrical industry professional for more than 32 years, he has worked on projects ranging from one-person operations to those with multimillion-dollar budgets. Owen is certified as a national electrical code instructor and sponsor in 32 states, and has facilitated numerous seminars for electrical license exam preparation. He is the president and primary instructor for the National Code Seminars and a principal voting member of the National Fire Protection Association 70: National Electrical Code, Technical Panel No. 3.
Phillip S. Prichard, C.H.M.M., C.F.P.S.
Phillip S. Prichard, course chairman of Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center and contract instructor for the National Safety Council, provides consultations in emergency response issues and helps evaluate emergency response exercises. For 12 years, Prichard has served as an adviser to emergency responders and the International Association of Fire Chiefs in emergency response to weapons of mass destruction. His specialties include hazardous materials, incident command, terrorism training, and emergency planning. Prichard received a B.S. in fire service administration from Brenau University and earned Georgia Tech certificates in Industry Safety and Health, Construction Safety and Health, and Hazardous Materials.
Paul Schlumper, C.S.P., P.E.
Paul Schlumper, head of Georgia Tech’s Safety Engineering Branch and senior research engineer, oversees research efforts in occupational safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness and response, and fire safety. Schlumper has nearly 20 years of experience working as a trainer and consultant in Occupational Safety and Health, ISO 14000 and Environmental Management Systems, and environmental compliance. As a member of the OSHA On-Site Safety and Health Consultation team, he has assisted hundreds of facilities in safety and health management and compliance. Schlumper received an M.S.I.E. and a B.S.I.E. from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Bill Warner, C.S.P.
Bill Warner, course instructor at Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center, is the corporate loss control manager for Brasfield & Gorrie, a full-service general contracting, construction management, and design/build service provider. He is a certified safety professional with more than 29 years of experience in construction safety.
Warner’s areas of expertise include fall protection, electrical safety, and cranes.
Arthur R. Wickman, C.I.H.
Arthur R. Wickman, branch head of Georgia Tech’s Health Sciences Branch and senior research scientist, supervises industrial hygienists providing consultation to private Georgia employers through OSHA’s On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program, which focuses on providing assistance to small employers (less than 250 employees) in high hazard industries. Wickman received a M.S. in industrial hygiene from Central Missouri State University, a B.A. in secondary education from Wichita State University, and a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Kansas. He is a certified industrial hygienist by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
Jonathan Worrell, Compliance Assistance Specialist
Jonathan Worrell, compliance assistance specialist for the Atlanta East Area OSHA Office, provides outreach, technical assistance, training, education, and advice in occupational safety and health to employers and employees, trade and labor organizations, professional associations and organizations, OSHA stakeholders, and the public. During his OSHA tenure, he has performed more than 2,200 inspections in diverse workplaces in construction and general industry and investigated more than 130 fatal workplace accidents.
Worrell received a B.A. in political science from the University of Alabama. He is a certified safety and health manager and an authorized OSHA outreach trainer for construction and general industry.
