Maynard Spence dedicated his career to promoting job-site safety on construction projects. His dedication lives through the efforts of the Maynard Spence Foundation. In partnership with the Georgia Tech Research Institute and other organizations, the foundation offers two annual scholarships for construction safety education.
Maynard Spence Scholarship for Construction Safety Education (Certificate in Construction Safety and Health)
This scholarship consists of the OTI 500 Trainer Course in Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry, the qualifying course to teach the Occupational Safety and Health Administrations 10-hour and 30-hour courses. The scholarship provides for two additional core courses and three elective courses, which comprise a six-course certificate program in construction safety. All courses must be taken through GTRI’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center.
Applicants must have five years experience in the construction safety and health field and attend in a weeklong construction safety and health course (OTI 510 or its equivalent).
The recipient is expected to complete the OTI 500 Course within two months of the award or at the next available offering; teach a free required OSHA 10-Hour course within six months of receiving the award and completing OTI 500; and participate in at least two certificate classes each year after the award.
Maynard Spence Safety First Scholarship Award
This scholarship is for candidates interested in a construction safety career. The scholarship consists of the OTI 510 Occupational Safety and Health Standard Course for the Construction Industry.*
*Applicants must have five years experience in the construction industry.
